As the world’s biggest sporting event, the World Cup, Kicks off in Brazil on June 12, I like to take a cursory look at the five countries representing the African continent. Also, I want to highlight what some commentators, broadcasters, and football analysts are saying about the chances of success for these countries.

The five African teams are as follows:
Cameroon (Group A)
Ivory Coast (Group C)
Nigeria (Group F)
Ghana (Group G)
Algeria (Group H)

Writing for ‘A billion voices,’ the Guardian’s Africa Network, Antoinette Muller wonders why African teams under-perform at the World cup?

‘Despite the skill and talent of African players, and their obvious achievements, success is viewed as a novelty,’ Muller says.

On the June 9 edition of Public Radio International (PRI) ‘The World,’ dedicated to the so-called ‘Beautiful Game,’ host Marco Werman said he was rooting for Cameroon.

“It’s always Cameroon,” he said while reminiscing Roger Miller during the 1990 World Cup, as well as the time he spent in the continent working for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
